DIVE INTO BUSAN: BEYOND SEOUL’S SHADOW
Seoul might be South Korea's superstar city, but Busan, the "bright" one facing the East Sea, is its charming, laid-back cousin. Think stunning beaches, vibrant markets, ancient temples, and a touch of southern hospitality – all minus the overwhelming crowds. Busan's unique topography, like Rio's or Cape Town's, adds to its allure, with different districts offering distinct experiences.
Ready to explore this hidden gem? Buckle up for 5 reasons why Busan should be your next Korean adventure:
1. Jagalchi Fish Market: Seafood Nirvana
Imagine a bustling cube buzzing with life, overflowing with colorful stalls selling the freshest catch. Dive into Jagalchi, a feast for the senses and the stomach. Watch merchants with legendary bargaining skills hawk hundreds of fish and shellfish species, all displayed live in tanks. Grab a seat at a second-floor restaurant overlooking the harbor, and savor your purchases cooked to perfection – seafood heaven!
2. Haeundae Beach: Sun, Sand, and Cityscape
Escape the urban jungle and sprawl out on Haeundae's golden sands, stretching over nearly 1.5km. Take a refreshing dip, build sandcastles, or simply soak up the sun. Breathe in the fresh air as you stroll along the pine-lined promenade, with a backdrop of towering buildings showcasing Busan's architectural evolution. Don't miss the futuristic Busan X The Sky observatory for breathtaking panoramic views. For a unique coastal experience, hop on the Haeundae Beach Train, offering panoramic rides in charming capsules.
3. Haedong Yonggungsa Temple: Tranquility by the Sea
Step back in time at Haedong Yonggungsa, a 14th-century Buddhist temple perched on the dramatic coast. Wander through serene courtyards, marvel at the intricate details adorning pagodas and pavilions, and soak in the mesmerizing vistas of the East Sea crashing against the rocks. Witness the monks' chants at dusk, adding a touch of magic to the tranquil atmosphere. To get there, you’ll need a taxi as there is little public transport.
4. Gamcheon Culture Village: A Fairytale Come True
Get transported to a world of colorful houses cascading down a hillside, reminiscent of an Italian village. Gamcheon, once a haven for refugees during the Korean War, has been revitalized with vibrant street art and whimsical sculptures. Get lost in the maze of winding lanes, capture Instagram-worthy shots at every corner, and enjoy the panoramic views of the bay studded with skyscrapers.
5. Seomyeon Pojangmacha Street: Foodie Delights Under Neon Lights
Indulge in Busan's street food culture at Seomyeon, the city's bustling heart. Amidst the neon lights and towering department stores, discover hidden gems – tiny pojangmacha stalls run by friendly ajummas (aunties). Pull up a stool and savor classic Korean fare like tteokbokki (spicy rice cakes), mandu (dumplings), and grilled meats, all bursting with flavor. It's a fun and social experience you won't forget!

TRAVEL DIARIES
The terrible holidays of Johny
“The first vacation with friends. We'd planned it as soon as one of us got a driving license. We borrowed a minivan and set off with 5 of us plus Looping, an adorable 55kg Labrador. And then I don't know why we got it into our heads that Brittany in April was a great destination. So we rented a gîte and set off for a week of discovery in Brittany. We arrive in the evening, it's raining nicely and it's not hot but it's okay, there's just a little smell of something rotting outside. The gîte looks nice from the outside, but we were quickly disillusioned when we got inside. Firstly because we came across the remains of the previous tenants' last meal, never a good sign, and secondly because the house was riddled with traps. Between the farted radiators pinned to the wall by the bedside tables in the bedrooms, the unscrewed light bulbs balanced on top of the halogen lamps that fall off when we try to light up, and the fact that only one radiator in 8 works... Full of optimism, we thought we'd spend our time outside visiting, but we didn't really know the local climate. 100/120 kmh of wind, freezing rain falling horizontally, deadly waves smashing the rocks... and me alone like an idiot having to make the dog pee (who loved the vacation, by the way). I was depressed for 6 days, the only nice moments: eating crêpes in the warmth, drinking in bars in the warmth, watching the waves from afar in the car in the warmth. Oh, and on the last day, to avoid the blues, we spent the day at a thalasso therapy spa... just goes to show how low the morale of the troops was.”
