TRAVEL DIARIES
Always check the water!

“I lived in Ghana for two months. I lived with a host family and two other Australian girls who I had just met in Ghana. The house was one of the nicest in the area, however there were the expected drawbacks of lack of electricity and no hot running water. I was completely okay with this until a discovery we made on one of our last days in the house...
To shower, we would splash ourselves with water scooped in smaller buckets, from two very large tubs that slightly uncovered in the humid weather.
One day, the large tubs were close to empty and we made a closer inspection of them. We found black slime and a bunch of small black worms wriggling around at the base of the tub and in the water.
We were pretty horrified that we'd been washing ourselves with this fairly contaminated water for the past few weeks. We were lucky to avoid serious illness.
Unfortunately, contaminated water is the unavoidable reality faced by billions of people across the world. For me, it was another huge moment of realizing how truly privileged I am.”
