TRAVEL DIARIES

Always watch out for those bars without glasses.

“When I was a teenager in the UK, I saved up enough cash to get a flight to Athens Greece for a few weeks and take a ferry ride through some of the islands. One small island I visited was called Ios and had a reputation for being a party destination.

Sure enough, once I had found somewhere to pitch my tent, I headed downtown with some other travelers to the town. One bar we visited was called the "Upside Down" bar. It had no glasses, so you ordered your drink, bent over backwards and put your head on the bar with your mouth open while they poured the drink directly into your mouth.

As you can imagine I got pretty hammered that night, and early in the morning I stumbled back in the direction of my campsite near the beach only to pass out on the side of the dirt track road. I woke up at dawn with a really bad headache to find out that I was bitten all over my legs and the feet by mosquitoes. My flipflops had fallen off and I was swollen and itching like never before in my life, not to mention the sore head and vomit effects.

The mosquito bites on the soles of my feet and on my toes turned out to be the biggest problem, as every time I took a few steps they started swelling up again and itching like crazy.

Ah, the things we do when we were young! Makes me laugh now, but it was pretty miserable at the time.”
